Being the world's largest country, Russia offers a plethora of attractive destinations and exciting adventures to choose from. Due to the friendly diplomatic ties with our country, Indians can obtain a Russian visa, while adhering to some comparatively relaxed rules. The following are the major visa types depending on your purpose of travel and duration of stay:
- Tourist Visa: A tourist visa is issued to Indians seeking to enter the country excursions, visiting cultural sites, and sightseeing. The visa can be both single and double entry, and is given for a period not extending 30 days per stay.
- Business Visa: A business visa is issued to Indian citizens, who seek to enter the Russian Federation for participating in seminars and conferences, meeting business partners, or conducting negotiations. The single and double entry visas are valid for 90 days, while the multiple entry visa offers a validity of up to 1 year, and the period of stay cannot exceed 90 days within any 180 day period. (Multiple entry visas with the validity period of up to 1 year are issued to Indian citizens on the condition that during the previous year these citizens have been granted a visa at least once and have used it, in accordance with the law on entry and stay in the territory of the Russian Federation).
- Transit Visa: This single entry visa is issued to Indian citizens, for the purpose of transit travel through the territory of the Russian Federation. It can be issued for a period of up to 10 days (in case of travel by railway or car) or 3 days (in case of travel by air). You might also choose to apply for a double entry transit visa if you are planning to exit and enter the country twice. This visa is valid for 30 days.
Application Guide
It is not recommended to apply for a visa directly to the Russian Embassy/Consulate in India. They have outsourced their visa application process to Indra Visa Fiduciary Services. These centers are here to enhance the quality of service to prospective applicants and to facilitate visa procedure. They are designated by the Russian Consular Institutions and are fully capable of accepting and processing documents required for a Russian visa, forwarding them to the Russian Consular Offices from any individuals, organizations or companies (including travel agencies). Their agents can consult a client regarding filling out the visa application, required documents, processing time and other visa formalities. You can also apply directly to the Russian Embassy Consular Division or Consulate General of Russia.
The final decision to issue or refuse a Russian visa lies with the Russian Consular Institutions.
It is mandatory to secure an original letter from a tourist agency in Russia before starting your visa application process. It should contain all the details as described in the checklist section on our website. The entire procedure requires exhaustive research and clarity so as to get the accurate requirements.
Once this is done, prepare the set of essential forms, in accordance with the specifications for the selected type of visa. You can download them again from the document checklist outlined on our page. Next, fill out electronic visa application on the website of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. Select the closest IFS Visa Center/ Embassy/ Consulate for submitting your application. Print out the completed application form and sign it. Submit your documents and the visa application form to the selected office during the working hours, after scheduling an appointment.
Post submission, the complete process takes 3-4 working days, exclusive of Saturdays, Sundays, and Public Holidays. You can choose to collect your stamped passport in person, request for courier delivery, and can also apply for visa readiness notification via phone, SMS, or email.
