When you are planning to visit the United States, you need to apply for a non-immigrant visa. Following are the basic short stay visa types for Indian citizens:
- Tourist Visa: The B-2 or tourist visa is for travel that is recreational in nature, including tourism and visits with friends or relatives
- Business Visa: The B-1 or business visa is for travelers consulting with business associates, attending scientific, educational, professional or business conventions/conferences, settling an estate or negotiating contracts
- Transit Visa: An Indian citizen traveling in immediate and continuous transit through the United States en-route to a foreign destination requires a valid C-1 or transit visa
Application Guide
Often, the B-1 and B-2 visas are combined and issued as one visa: the B-1/B-2 or B. The first step is to complete the Non-immigrant Visa Electronic Application (DS-160) form online.Once you have completed the DS-160, you must pay the visa fee.
For the fee payment, create a profile here and choose the Schedule Appointment option. On the payment confirmation screen you will be presented with payment options and further details of how to initiate payment. This can take up to 2 business days from time of payment for your receipt to be activated. There are 4 methods for the fee payment:
- National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT)
- Mobile Payments – IMPS
- Cash – Over the Counter at DRUK Bank
- Cash – Over the Counter (AXIS Bank and Citibank)
The next step is to schedule your visa appointment - One for the Visa Application Center (VAC) and one for the visa interview at the Embassy or Consulate.
First, schedule your visa interview appointment at the Embassy or Consulate.
Second, schedule your appointment at a Visa Application Center. This appointment will allow you to go to one of the five Visa Application Center locations to have your fingerprints and photo taken. This appointment must be at least 1 day before your visa interview appointment at the Embassy or Consulate. You will need three pieces of information in order to schedule your appointment:
- Your passport number
- The date you paid your fee
- The ten (10) digit bar-code number from your DS-160 confirmation page
For your Visa Application Center appointment, you will need to bring:
- A valid passport
- Your DS-160 confirmation page
- Your appointment confirmation page
Following your visit to the Visa Application Center to have your photo and fingerprints taken, you will then visit the U.S. Embassy or Consulate on the date and time of your visa interview. You must bring :
- A printed copy of your appointment letter
- Your DS-160 confirmation page
- Supporting Documents as per your visa type (detailed in the document checklist section)
Post your interview and document verification process, if your visa application is approved, your passport and visa can be collected from the pickup location you selected when you scheduled for interview appointment. You may also check your visa application status online by entering your interview location and your DS-160 bar-code number.
